Susan Pinard : Zentangles
Decorated Letters with Zentangles
Using zentangles we can create colourful exciting letters, which can be used on cards, envelopes, bookmarks and with your own calligraphy. This is a modern way of dressing up letters. The possibilities are endless.
Materials needed:
pencil, eraser, ruler paper (50 lb. is good to work with) colour pencils or markers fine black marker (like Pigma Micron for drawing the patterns) elastic band and another pencil (for making wide letters) optional - metallic markers (for adding highlight dots, etc.)
Saturday Nov 8 1:30 - 4:30
Katie Noah : Pointed pen
An introduction to pointed pen calligraphy, covering essential tools, an overview of common scripts, and basic techniques. We'll explore pressure and release through hands-on practice, making it a great session for beginners or anyone looking to refresh their skills.
- Straight or oblique pen holder (Speedball has a good straight holder. If you'd like a Speedball oblique holder, don't get the fully black one, instead get their 2-in-1 Oblique holder that has a brass flange which I've seen at Michaels. Otherwise there are some through Etsy or Amazon at reasonable prices. Look for one with a brass/metal flange. I'll also have extra holders for people to try out if you struggle to find one)
- Pointed pen nibs, like Hunt 56, Hunt 101, Nikko G, Hunt 22B. If you don't have nibs, I'll have extra.
- water based calligraphy ink, like Sumi or walnut ink. Fountain pen ink won't work for pointed pen. If you don't have any inks that suit, I'll have plenty to share around.
- Pencil
- Marker paper or Layout paper
- paper towels or rag
- small container for water
Sunday Nov 9 9:30 - 12:30
Bev Gershkovitch : Fraktur
The Fraktur script is a style of Calligraphy that emerged during the 16th Century and has been widely used in German speaking countries. It is based on the Blackletter or Textura Gothic style of writing that developed in France in the 12th century. It became the standard script in much of Europe.
The Original Gutenburg Bible was printed using this script.
Since 1941, Fraktur is still used by the Pennsylvania Dutch and other sects in the Lancaster County areas of Pennsylvania, USA for baptisms, bookplates, birth announcements and family trees.
After exposing you to this Alphabet, we will create and embellish a project such as a "House Blessing", Marriage certificate", "Birth Announcement or Family Tree.", etc.
Material needed:
- ruler, eraser, pencil and some coloured pencils
- calligraphy practice paper and some watercolour paper.
- watercolour paint and brush
- Pilot parallel pens, 3.8 or 6.O (are preferable),. (with ink on reserve)
- Speedball C-0 metal nib (wide nib) (with ink on reserve)
If you have pilot parallel pens, you do not need Speedball.
- black marker pen for thin lines, no India ink - felt colour chisel shaped markers (optional)Sunday Nov 9 1:30 - 4:30
Madeleine Rousseau : bookmaking
Making books is a creative way to present your calligraphy artwork in a 3-dimensionnal object. Some book structures are fairly simple to learn. Few inexpensive tools and materials are required and attractive results can be obtained. Once the basic is learnt, the calligrapher can use it in many variations for their projects. In this workshop, we will explore a couple of these simple book structures based on folding and cutting single sheets of papers.
What to bring:
- 12-15 sheets of paper. Paper should be about the weight of paper for sketchbook. Large sheets are preferred (11 X 14 in. to 14 X17 in), as these will be folded to become smaller.
- Bring a few sheets of slightly heavier , possibly colored papers to make the covers of the books. It will be folded, so not so thick that it will crack.
- Your text-calligraphy some of the the sheets of paper to make the project more personal. Your calligraphy practice sheets & other decorated sheets you may have (e.g. paste paper, zentangles, notes) can make great books.
- a bone folder, or butter knife (to get crisp creases in the folds of paper)
- A cutting mat (if you do not have one, alternatively a thick piece of cardboard (the back of sketchbooks are usually thick cardboard). This prevents damaging the tables and slipping of your cutting knife)
- An exacto knife with new blades
- A pencil, eraser
- A ruler
- A fresh glue stick
