Description:

A calligraphy course for any and all calligraphers, from those with no experience to those wanting to improve their skills and knowledge. This course will explain pens, paper inks and other fundamentals. This information is not often taught and will help any calligrapher in their future studies. These fundamentals will apply to all aspects of calligraphy regardless of script or style of letters. Beginners with no prior experience are encouraged and will be welcomed. A basic script will be demonstrated so everyone can take advantage of the course.

Materials List:

Basic calligraphy supplies will be required and are normally available at DeSerres or Wallacks. Students should have:

  • a pencil, sharpener, eraser and a ruler,
  • a broad edge pen, example Speedball C-0, C-1 or C-2, or equivalent Mitchell, Brause or Tape nibs, with holder,
  • a pointed pen example Hunt 56, Hunt 22B or equivalent, with holder,
  • layout or marker paper, preferable 11 x 14, Strathmore, Canson or equivalent,
  • Medium (ink), Please, water based NOT waterproof, example Walnut Ink, gouache or water colour paints, avoid acrylic or India ink.
  • small jar for water and any other normal supplies you prefer. Specialized pens, inks and papers will be supplied by the instructor.

Note - if you are unsure or unable to find something, contact the Calligraphy Society of Ottawa. An email will be sent to all students weeks ahead of the course with more information.

None. This course is suited to participants of all levels (beginners to advanced skills).
