Description:

Fraktur: Broken by Design is a course designed for beginners who have never used a pen before through intermediates wishing to learn this script or brush up their skills. Fraktur is by far the most adaptable and widely-travelled Gothic script, having enjoyed hundreds of years of use from the 16th century and still sees much use in modern works for its distinctive look.

Materials List:
  • 1-2 pencils w/ pencil sharpener
  • White eraser
  • Ruler, 18" is preferable but 12" is acceptable
  • One of the following pens:
    • Brause Bandzug 5mm nib w/ holder
    • Speedball C-0 (zero) nib w/ holder
    • Automatic Pen, size #3 or #4
    • 4-5mm wide calligraphy marker
    • If you require a pen or have one but are not sure if it will work, ask me.
  • Do not buy any ink before the first class. We will make some recommendations and will have some walnut ink to share. If you have them, bring ink, sumi or gouache (with water, brush, and container/palette/etc. as required).
  • Paper: Pads of at least 11x14" are preferable, and suitable for pen and ink. If you can't find it on the label, ask at the store whether it is rated for ink (wet media) or not. If unsure, don't buy anything as we will have enough on hand for the first evening.
  • An open container for water (around 1 cup/250ml is good)
  • A lint-free rag you don't mind getting dirty

Bring any calligraphy supplies you already have. Don't go out and buy a lot of new stuff; it is better to wait until the first class so you can see our recommendations. If you have any questions about supplies, please contact me.
