Description:

Foundational with a taste of Romans will be a course designed for beginners or those more experienced calligraphers who want to refine pen skills and learn more about this script. Foundational is a wonderful script to learn. It is very historical and does provide a good model for learning pen and ink skills. To provide capitals, we will be showing the Roman letters. This knowledge can be applied to all the other major historical scripts.

Materials List:

If you can't find any of the supplies, don't worry — we will bring extras for the first evening.

  • 2 or 3 pencils, either H or HB hardness, and a pencil sharpener
  • White eraser
  • Ruler, 18" is preferred however 12" will do
  • Broad-edge nib, either Brause 2mm or 2.5mm, Speedball C2 or C3, or Mitchell #2, and a nib holder.
  • Do not buy any ink before the first class. We will make some recommendations and will have some walnut ink to share. If you have them, bring ink or gouache (with water, brush, and container/palette/etc. as required).
  • Paper: Pads of at least 11x14" are preferable, and suitable for pen and ink. If you can't find it on the label, ask at the store whether it is rated for ink (wet media) or not. If unsure, don't buy anything as we will have enough on hand for the first evening.

Bring any calligraphy supplies you already have. Don't go out and buy a lot of new stuff; it is better to wait until the first class so you can see our recommendations. If you have any questions about supplies, please contact us.

Calligraphy supply vendors in Ottawa and online can be found on our Links page.
