Batarde script is the last of the major script styles of the Middle Ages, before printing. It is a half Gothic. In Northern Europe, pure Gothic had become very popular, but southern Europe and England softened their Gothic styles with some Italic influence. Batarde is the forerunner of Gothicized Italic. It is part of a continuum including secretary hands. It was usually written small and fast, almost cursive, and makes a lovely texture on the page. It was Shakespeare's hand.
